Now it’s been said before that I can be a bit of a hot head if things don’t go my way, which of course I strongly deny.  In poker terms that would mean when my pocket aces get cracked by the fish who calls a massive preflop raise with jack six suited and hits three running cards for a flush, as was the case earlier this week – even now I can still feel my blood boiling at the thought of it.  Ok, deep breaths as my doctor taught me…… that’s better.

As annoying as it is to be on the losing end of such misfortune we all love to be on the winning end, and if we’re honest we all try those crazy moves at some time or another just so we can feel that very moment when our gut instincts are on target and we’re the ones running round the living room whooping for joy.  Those, after all, are the moments that keep us playing this wonderful game.

For the times when we get stung the secret is to reduce the amount of damage done by keeping our wits and not going on tilt.  It’s one thing to lose half your stack to bad chance but another thing to throw the rest away chasing a losing hand.

When you’re on tilt your emotions get the better of you and all of a sudden you see hands that you wouldn’t normally play in a whole different light, it’s a combination of panic and aggression that makes you want to regain your winnings but in the same short amount of time it took to lose them.  When you feel that coming on take my advice and click the ‘Away’ button for a couple of rounds while you go and make a drink or just take some fresh air.

Remember this:  Gains will usually come slowly, losses will usually come quickly.

So, keep a cool head and roll with the punches and in the long run you should have more wins than losses.

How great is Yahoo Poker! I hope you're enjoying playing on the site as much as I am. I'm finding myself late for everything at the moment as I try to fit just one more quick game in, which leads to another and another.

I'm going to hold my hands up early on and admit that I'm a bit of an addict when it comes to Yahoo poker, but my time spent playing is justified because I'm either a great player or very lucky as I've been doing really well. Lets face it, who wouldn't love the satisfaction of winning a few quid with the excitement of the casino in your front room. There's also no need to dress up to play in fact my pj's and slippers are my usual playing attire- and where else do you get to bluff through your back teeth and get rewarded for it?

If you're a regular poker player I'm sure you'll be loving the new interface on Yahoo poker where we've listened to what players want and put it into action, and all without clogging up your hard drive. It doesn't get any better than this.

If however you're new to the game and are perhaps feeling a little daunted by the prospect of learning all the rules and losing a stack of money don't worry because I'm on hand to help. We've got in depth expert tutorials on our home page talking you through the various aspects of playing good poker. Even once you've progressed from the play money through to the real money tables our poker buddy is one click away to give you an idea of how strong your hand really is, look for the blue button on the bottom right of the screen while playing.

Looking forward to meeting you at the tables.
